La marula es un árbol de hoja caduca original de las cálidas regiones del África subecuatorial, conocido como “El Árbol del Elefante” dada la pasión que siente dicha especie por el fruto. Cuando el fruto cae a tierra, fermenta ligeramente, y se dice que vuelve locos no sólo a los elefantes, sino también a las jirafas, cebras, monos, etc. Sin embargo, estos animales tendrían que comer grandes cantidades para llegar a emborracharse.
